Berkeley Ski Club Service Requirement Policy

The following policy was originally adopted March 15, 2015, and is set forth here solely for historical reasons. The current policy is in the BSC Membership Guide.

The policy was updated at June 25, 2018 Board Meeting. Dues of members who lack service credit will now increase by $150 instead of $100.

Service Requirement for New Members

New members will be required to begin service to the club as a board member or in a board-appointed position within five years of joining the club. After completing the service requirement for the first time, new members will be considered existing members. As existing members, they must meet the service requirement once every 10 years.

Service Requirement for Existing Active Members

Current members must begin service to the club within 10 years since the date when they joined the club or within 10 years since their last year of service, whichever is less. This service requirement must be met once every 10 years as long as a member remains active.

Service Definition

Serve as a board member, in a board-appointed position or in some other significant capacity if approved by the current board. For example, the board may choose to grant service credits to members for sharing a board position, for serving in a newly-created board or appointed position, for serving on a committee or completing a project. In such cases, the project or committee should involve a significant time commitment.

Consequence of Failing to Meet the Service Requirement

Dues increased by $100 $150. The $100 $150 increase would remain in effect in subsequent years if the service requirement is not met and the member does not receive a waiver. However, the increase would not grow after multiple years (in other words, it would remain at $100 $150 in year two rather than increasing to $200).

If a member attempts to satisfy the service requirement and is not successful in securing a position, they will receive a one-year waiver of the $100 $150 dues increase during the next club year. Members can satisfy this requirement by notifying the club president of their interest in serving prior to the election to select board members for the next club year. Members can specify one or more positions that they are interested in filling. However, the president will have the prerogative of asking the member to accept a position other than the one(s) that the member requested in order to fill all open positions. The waiver will only be granted if no board or appointed position was offered to the member. A waiver can be granted to a member in multiple consecutive years if the above conditions are met.

Implementation of New Policy

New members: The service requirement became effective upon passage of this policy, March 31, 2015. New members who joined on or after this date must begin service within five years of joining. Members who joined before March 31, 2015, will be considered existing members and will be subject to this policy as described in the next paragraph.

Existing Active Members: The service requirement will become effective in the 2017-18 club year. Existing members who have not met the service requirement in the previous 10 years would need to secure a service position or obtain a waiver by the Spring, 2017, board election. Those who do not meet this requirement would have their dues raised by $100 in the Fall of 2017.

Credit for Prior Service to the Club

The 2015-16 board will review large projects from the last 10 years such as the disciplinary committee and the kitchen remodel project and to consider awarding service credits to members who participated in those projects. Any existing member may also petition the board for service credit in recognition of significant work that they performed for the club. The current board will be responsible for determining if credit should be given.
